After the 500 school groups left, the Brooklyn Botanical Garden was great. I learned how to get there by elevator: Transfer at 42nd to the B/Q line and get off at the Prospects Heights. But be warned: The people on the subway DO NOT like unfolded strollers. Here's what could happen if you do:
On the way home, Owen was sleeping so I brought my double stroller on the subway without folding it. It was 4:00pm. I knew it was coming: an elitist business man walked on and remark that he has two kids, and ALWAYS folds his stroller. And that someday this was going to be against the law. And that it was really inconsiderate that I brought the stroller on. And then some little 17 year old boy started in on me too. Oh no they didn't!
I'm so ashamed at the things I said back. At least I didn't use swear words. I ended my rant with "I wish triplets on both of you!" and got a few laughs from the people in the subway. Ok, one person laughed. The rest probably thought I was crazy. But look at the pictures I took at the gardens! The cherry blossoms! Pink everywhere! Spring! Those suspenders again! New York is great! My life is perfect! I didn't cry twice today! Yes I did!
Sharon, I'm so proud of you for being brave and taking those kids everywhere!! WOW, they have the greatest mom ever.
ReplyDeletei love your honesty! if i had just looked at the pics and not read your words, i would've thought you lead a fairy-tale life. it's so nice when bloggers are real. thank you!
ReplyDeletei wish triplets on both of them also!
Ha! Go Sharon!
ReplyDeleteI totally get you. And just remember, we are always two blocks away!
ReplyDeletehaaaaa stupid new yorkers. your life is perfect! don't ever think otherwise. and those pictures are kind of amazing
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photos!
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a beautiful day in the park with the boys and gorgeous pics to show for it!! The cherry blossoms are amazing.
ReplyDeleteAs for those 2 men on the subway, no need to wish anything on them, they are already living sad little lives and will never know the joy of a fun day at the park with their babies!
PS - Love the suspenders!
Sharon! I seriously laughed out loud with those last few lines. I love that you aren't afraid to speak your mind to jerks. I always get nervous and don't say anything and think about what I should've said after the fact. And then it bugs me for a day or two. My line for the elitist business man: well I guess you should've taken a cap, ya cheapskate. hahahaa Next time put some headphones on and when they start in, start nodding and smiling. -Jeannine
ReplyDeleteWow! Flash flood of comments. Thanks everyone. Jeannine: I did say that! And I added that he could have saved $2.50 and walked. Ha, I was on a roll.
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to comment for awhile. Sharon-you have an amazing eye for photography! I love all the new pictures you are taking! You are very talented!
ReplyDeleteYour photos are getting better and better. Did you get new lenses or new editing software or something? I love it! I love that you told that guy what's up. Sometimes I want to do that so badly, and it bugs me way too much. I miss being able to be around you. You always open up my eyes and my perspective, and I love that.
ReplyDeleteMarisa: thanks! i bought a canon rebel t2i with a 50mm 1.8 lens. it does all the work for me. all the pictures i posted today where straight from the camera. :)
ReplyDeletePeople on public transportation can be so bratty and make you cry. I hear you. I think it's awesome you stood up for yourself - way to go. The pink blossoms look heavenly.
ReplyDeleteJust tell them that in Paris they support mothers and let them keep the strollers unfolded. Then flip them the bird.
ReplyDeletesharon, i just found your blog and i am in love with it! i love your writing style. i am supposed to be cleaning and packing for a weekend in CA (by myself!!) but have been reading your blog instead. :)
ReplyDeletei NEVER fold my stroller on the subway. in fact, one time i was on a crowded subway and saw this family with 3 kids and they had folded up their stroller and were trying keep their kids in line as well as keep them from falling over... it looked like way too much work. i thought for sure they must have been out of towners, because no one i know would ever do that. i'm glad you gave it to those guys. i never know what to say in the moment.
Oh man. I wish I had been there. I'm always entertained by your altercations with fellow NYCers.
ReplyDeletecorinne: haha the first thing rob said after i told: "Was Corinne there?"
ReplyDeletelook at all of those comments. wowzers. I also love, love, love the pictures. And love your honesty. this post made me miss you. :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures... I love your last two lines. And I wish triplets on them too, meanies.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that was an unspoken train rule. Whatever. I'm sure those are the same people who did not give their seat up for me when I was 9 months preggo:)
ReplyDeleteLove it!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! And such beautiful photos. (Followed the link you posted on Momoir's post on FB.)
ReplyDeleteahaha! that was funny!
ReplyDeletehahaha this makes me think of the time when a NYC bus driver made me cry as she wouldn't let me on with my mountain buggy. little did i know that outside of vancouver, canada, buses tend to expect you to fold your strollers. duh. ppl are so rude aren't they?

That is crazy, what are you supposed to do with two kids out of a buggy on a fast, powerful, moving object?!? Glad you gave them a piece of your mind, triplets for those men. I was expecting a more "NYC" mentality on the tube when we moved London, but everyone here doesn't bat and eye when you have your kid in or out of the buggy and people ALWAYS offer to help carry the buggy down the stairs. Love your blog.
ReplyDeleteI so love this - totally get it, I have twin boys too and had a similar situation happen in the post office a couple of years ago during the holidays. I can't remember exactly what I said (there may have been a swear word!) but I did it in front of a long line of people, and I'm pretty sure I made him look like a jerk. Rock on twin mom!
