Follow Up: My Job Hunt

Thanks so much for the advice yesterday. I spent a lot of time checking out the links you suggested and sending out resumes. You know what I learned? I have the best readers. Period.

I was also stoked when Liz Jacob over at Course Horse contacted me. She thought it might be helpful if I took one of the classes offered through Course Horse. And she even gave me a coupon for $100 off! So nice, right?

As I checked out the site, I was looking classes that could teach me skills that prospective employers want to see. Out of the many I found, the one that stood out was the Intro to Excel class. Perfect. Almost every position I've seen is looking for Excel skills, a program I haven't used in years. But then...

But then! I stumbled on a Friday night Couples Cupcake Decorating class! And it's within my $100 budget! I couldn't resist. Please don't be too mad at me for signing up for it. I'm absolutely hopeless.

Ella's Fourth Birthday. Cupcakes!

At least I know that after taking the cupcake class, Rob and I will always have jobs waiting for us at Magnolias. There's something comforting in that. Sort of.

  1. Sharon! You crack me up. You should for sure put that cupcake class on your resume in big bold letters on the top- with cupcake clipart!

    P.S.
    Microsoft offers free classes here:

  2. Hahahahaa Magnolias is great! Do you get benefits there? I mean apart from the obvious ones - but it may lead to an early case of heart disease. But cupcake decorating is way better than an excel intro - you can get a friend to do that for free! Good luck with the job hunt!

  3. Oh my gosh you are too funny! You can learn Excel on your own and there are plenty of tutorials online. You can even learn using Google Docs Spreadsheets if you don't have Excel on your computer (it's very similar). Can't wait to see the cupcakes!

  4. I don't blame you for signing up for the cupcake class...a perfectly logical decision! :) Also, best of luck on the job hunt...I know it can be disheartening after submitting resume+application again and again...but press on! You'll find the perfect job doing something you LOVE! (telling myself the same advice as I type....) :)

  5. Don't give up. I've been a stay at home mom for 10 years and it took me a long time to find a job. 7 to 8 months the least. I was feeling so demoralized and wondered if I made the right choice, about being out there too long as a stay at home mom. my husband assured me those years were time well spent with my kids and that i should never doubt it.I kept praying and putting the
thoughts out there that someone will give me a chance. My
break came I can't believe it happened. When you have pure intentions, things will fall into place.trust that good things will happen. Sending good thoughts for you!

  6. Good luck! And don't forget about educational publishing :) The major textbook publishing houses are all in New York: McGraw Hill, Norton - don't write them off because they aren't what you originally had in mind!

  8. wow. after your first post i really felt for you- i absolutely know how hard the current job market is these days. after reading this? not so much. i doubt liz contacted you (after such a sincere plea to your readers for help) with the intention that you'd take the donated money and use it for a cupcake class. this also isn't showing any potential employer reading your blog what kind of mindset or dedication you have about proving yourself to be worthy of a job.

basically, you admitted that your problem is no practical experience, and then when someone says "here's some FREE experience!" you choose not to take it.

  9. I have to say I agree with JMO. While cupcakes are yummy what a waste of someone's kind donation. Go get a refund and take the excel class.

  10. Yes, I see your point. However, the excel class is $275, even with my $100 discount, it's still $175. That amount is out of my budget.

Next week I'm writing about free ways to refresh my basic skills (like excel). Hope to see you back then :)

  14. You are amazing! Confucius once sais "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life” and I see that you love your life. That is very inspiring! So many people spend days in offices, hate their jobs, seach for new, pick on best resume writing service, have sleepless nights in order to satisfy their hirers and they do not know why they are doing that. And you just live and enjoy life!
