Women that Inspire

I watched the documentary Art & Copy a few nights ago (it's on Netflix instant watch!). It's all about the advertising world. Out of all the people they interviewed, I was most intrigued by Mary Wells Lawrence. It was her campaign that brought us the I Love NY phrase/song back in the seventies. AND she was the first woman CEO to make it onto the NY Stock Exchange board. I don't know what that means exactly, but it sounds impressive. And everything I read includes that piece of info, so I thought it was note worthy.

In the movie, she was asked what made her so successful. She responded, "I never get tired." Today, as I have a million things to do and feel totally exhausted, I keep telling myself, "I never get tired. I never get tired. I never get tired. And I LOVE NY!"

Learning about successful business women inspires me. Tina Fey is another one. Who else? Who are the women that inspire you? I'm thinking this might be a fun Babble post/slide show. I'll link back to your blog if I use yours!

  1. Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook. Her TED talk on why we have too few women leaders was very inspirational!

  2. Coco Chanel. My favorite quote by her is "The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud." I think that suits pretty well for blogging encouragement, too :]

& J.K. Rowling. The story of where she came from and where she is now is definitely inspiring. I watched an interview about her story where she said "Anything's possible if you've got enough nerve." She's a very respectable, intelligent woman.

  3. there is a great quote that i think of often: "remember, Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, but she did it backwards and in high heels.”

  5. Judy Blume. Not only has she established a long, fruitful writing career, but she's a good person that talks opening about important issues (like censorship.) When I heard her speak a few months ago at a conference, she said so many inspiring things, such as "It's determination as much as it is any kind of talent that's going to get you there."

Also, she's REAL..... She's open about the challenges she faces as a writer – that writing can be painful, that she's had to take breaks to regroup, etc. I adore Judy Blume! I posted more of my favorite Judy Blume quotes on my blog: http://www.jodikendall.com/blog/2011/8/16/qa-with-judy-blume.html

  9. Some of these are random, so I apologize...

Tina Fey for sure (have you heard the Fresh Air interview with her? Amazing!)
Roseanne Barr (funny, unapologetic, feminist, working class, PROUD)
Harper Lee (The fact that that book was written, by a woman, was such a risk)
Diane Keaton (she's always done what she wants to do, and she's had an incredible career)
Indra Kooyi (CEO of Pepsi, I hate them but I love her)

Also, my Boss! She's the most empowering and strong women I know!

  10. Miranda July, all the way. I admire her point of view and appreciate that she's made art accessible and interesting for so many people through her projects, movies, and art.

I thought this was funny: "That is my problem with life, I rush through it, like I'm being chased. Even things whose whole point is slowness, like drinking relaxing tea. When I drink relaxing tea I suck it down as if I'm in a contest for who can drink relaxing tea the quickest."

And my favorite (from her book "No One Belongs Here More Than You"): "I laughed and said, Life is easy. What I meant was, Life is easy with you here, and when you leave, it will be hard again."

  11. I agree with Ashley that J.K. Rowling is majorly inspiring. However, Barbara Kingsolver is one of my all time favorites. Her books are so beautifully written.

Last (but certainly not least) is Joanna Goddard. Each post makes me feel as though she is writing to me personally. Plus, I love how successful she is without seeming arrogant or snobby.

  13. I adore Miranda July - "Me and You and Everyone We Know" ranks as one of the best, most lovely movies I've ever seen. I remember just sitting in the theater when it was over, unable to move, not wanting to leave and break the "moment" I was in - thanks for sharing this!
