Brooklyn

thanks for this photo joanna. it's stunning!
Brooklyn. Lately it's meant a lot of pizza, ice cream, bridges, carousels, water, and friends. All fabulous things but, obviously, I haven't been going farther than DUMBO. I just can't resist it those city skyline views!

Joanna did a good job capturing the time we spent in DUMBO together last Saturday.  It was the best way to spend St. Patricks Day. Manhattan suddenly had a lot of adults wearing green shirts and beads and shouting WHOHOOoooo for absolutely no apparent reason. But come to think of it, Toby, Ella, Oscar, and Owen did their fair share of whoohoooing at the playground and on Jane's carousel too. I didn't mind it so much from them though.

But I know there's more to Brooklyn than DUMBO. I'm ready to delve in.

First, I'm obsessed with this map that tracks the status of the cherry blossoms at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. So far there's eleven trees that have had their first bloom, two that have already peeked, and tons that are still in pre-bloom. I can't wait to see the cherry blossoms again!

My friend Shoko is planning on taking me on a tour of Williamsburg in April. I better dress the part! I have some time. From my understanding, this is hipster central. If only I needed glasses or could grow a beard . . .

And finally, the Brooklyn Flea. Never been. Our friends Nick and Whit have agreed to sponsor a huge shopping spree for us. Isn't that right Nick?

But I know there's more. What about Brooklyn Heights? Prospects Heights? Park Slope? Fort Greene? What should I add to the list?

  5. DUMBO = Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass. It's a really fun area of Brooklyn. I love all of Brooklyn. If I ever moved to a big city, that would be it! My husband's grandmother has lived in Brooklyn her entire life and has owned a lovely brownstone in Park Slope since the 60's. I love visiting her every summer and exploring Brooklyn. I rarely even make it into Manhattan there is just so much to see and do in her section. Definitely check out Prospect Park. It's so lovely! The Brooklyn Museum of Art is great (free on the first Saturday of the month). Love the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.

Another vote for Brooklyn Heights Promenade and Williamsburg.

  6. Carroll Gardens! That's where we live and I love it. GREAT restaurants: Frankies 457, Lucali, Farmacy, Prime Meats, Buttermilk Channel....

  7. Brooklyn Heights Promenade and the Brooklyn Bridge Park! They're always holding great events at the park during the summer. Free movie nights, yoga... It's awesome!

  8. I live in and love Brooklyn! I rarely go to Manhattan on the weekends (yes, I'm one of those people...) because there is so much to do and see in my hood, Park Slope (super, super kid-friendly and a definite must for a day trip to Prospect Park + lunch + ice cream). So glad you're venturing out of the island. A friend of mine just left after living here for 2 years and she never explored Brooklyn... such a loss, I told her, ha!

For kids, Pier 6 of the Brooklyn Bridge Park is unbeatable. It just opened last summer, and the Water Lab is one of the coolest things I've EVER seen. I don't have kids, but was lucky to go with a 3-year-old friend who adored every minute of it. Just bring lunch -- since there's so few vendors, they're expensive!

  9. My sister lives in Williamsburg and I spent all of august last year with her. I was ready to be annoyed by all the hipsters, but I actually just loved it. The food was delicious (Pies & Thighs? Yes, please!), the boutiques are cute (Catbird and Bird, both so cool and so close to each other!) and I just thought the whole neighborhood was totally pleasant. Brooklyn Flea was super fun too, check out what I found here:

You're going to have so much fun exploring!

  11. A perfect event to travel down to Prospect Heights is The Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturday. They have events and performances throughout the day and evening including a very large dance party to wrap up the night. The best part is that it is all free! The museum is open all day to the public for free! You can find the info here: http://www.brooklynmuseum.org/visit/first_saturdays.php

It's a really kid and family friendly event and offers the best people watching anywhere. I also recommend walking to Franklin Ave to eat at any number of the amazing restaurants that are there. Chavelas is one of my favorites. I hope you guys get a chance to check it out! You can get there easily from the 2, 3, 4 or 5 train. Just get off at the Brooklyn Museum stop.

  12. I am the same as Jessica... I live in Boerum Hill and only go into the city during the week for work. I have become one of those people, but Brooklyn is as awesome as everyone says.

For kids - Transit Museum, Pier 6 (and Pier 1/BK Bridge Park) and Prospect Park are amazing. Food in the Boerum Hill/Carroll Gardens area is amazing.

You can actually walk from DUMBO, through the Promenade, to Pier 6. Amazing views of the city!

  15. Oh, I could go on and on about Brooklyn and how much I love it here. I've been here since 2001, started in Brooklyn Heights, then on to Cobble Hill and have been in Park Slope for the last 5 years. I used to blog a lot about all the good food and Brooklyn (thislittlepiglet.blogspot.com), but haven't had as much time lately since I spend most of my time chasing after my two little boys (and taking them on fun adventures all over Brooklyn!). I did some food tours for new parents before having my second son and keep thinking I need to start those up again.. Some day! You should definitely check out One Girl Cookies on Dean St (they just opened a second location in DUMBO). Cobble Hill Cinema also offers movies for kids at 4pm on Mondays and there are some cute playgrounds near there and The Chocolate Room is next door. Pier 6 is also great with kids, Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Children's Museum. There's even a new origami place in Park Slope that I haven't checked out yet but here is great. Here's a list of all my favorite food places in Bococa although I already have lots of new places I'd love to add: http://thislittlepiglet.blogspot.com/2011/01/little-piglet-list-best-of-bococa.html

  16. Sharon-- Cobble Hill is our old hood (now live in Harlem), and we visited yesterday to take our 16-month old to the Transit Museum. Such a cool place! The kiddos can hop in and out of an amazing collection of vintage subway cars, there's info on how the subway system was built and how it's powered, and even some old NYC buses that you can "drive". Follow it up with the best italian cookies at Monteleone's on Court Street, and you have a day that can't be beat.
Also, try out the coffee shop called Smooch in Ft. Greene-- lovely vibe and delicious goodies. Oh, and the Vanderbilt in Prospect Park... on Vanderbilt (duh). Really imaginative little plates and a fab date night place.

  17. I moved from Morningside Heights to Fort Greene. It's the best, whether you want a day with your kids or just alone/ with adults! The Brooklyn Flea is awesome - treasure hunting there is fantastic with kids. BAM is possibly one of the best performing arts venues EVER. We've got so many wonderful restaurants like Olea and Pequena and Madiba, to name but a few! Fort Greene Park is just wonderful - I spent this past year taking my first graders to it every other week, since we studied Brooklyn Habitats. After chasing down squirrels, red-breasted robins and trying to spot the 2 red-tailed hawks that live there to make observational drawings, the kids favorite part of it all was rolling down the huge hill that the park is on! Spend some time cooling off/ reading in Greenlight Bookstore. Then stop by Cafe Habana for a fun outdoor taco/ spicy corn/ margarita time! And end the day with Cake Man Raven for the best Red Velvet Cake EVER!
