My Favorite Fall Hair Trend: Written in Center Justification for No Reason

I've stopped doing my hair. Meaning, I get out of the shower and let it air dry. I don't even comb it and miraculously doesn't get knots. Sometimes it's frizzy. It's mostly frizzy. After showering I use one product: Oribe - Crème for Style. I don't know it's purpose exactly, but it smells amazing.

I stopped doing my hair ever since I met up with some of the coolest women in the city. After about an hour of hanging out with them, I realized I was the only one who had curled my hair for the gathering. All the women were sitting around with limp colorless hair. They looked beautiful. So I decided to jump on this trend the next day.

That was weeks ago. Then family photos happened, and we took an amazing photo! Except my hair. It's so limp and colorless in this shot. But so fashion forward!! That's what I keep telling myself . . .

  1. What a sweet photo! It's gorgeous. Plus I think your hair looks great. I think curling is kind of out-dated and unnecessary, but maybe that's just my own wishful thinking and justification of the fact that I never ever do anything to my hair except smush in a little bit of bumble and bumble texture (like you, I'm not exactly sure what it does, but it looks much better with it in, dirty and messy in a good way). I say keep it up!

  2. I think it looks gorgeous! It's not colourless at all in the family photo, the tips are honey-kissed. Beauty.

  3. Your hair looks great! I recently started doing the same thing. I used to ALWAYS brush my hair, then blow dry it, then brush it again after a shower. My hair is very long though and recently when I went to get my hair cut I had a lot of split ends so I decided to lay off the blow dryer and just let it air dry. It's usually wavy and sometimes I hate it but I think it's a lot healthier. When it starts getting cold out though I don't know if I'll be able to walk around with wet hair for hours waiting for it to dry!

  4. Such wonderful photo! Nice to see the whole family together! I love the the shot doesn't look overly stiff and posed like so many family photos do.

  5. Hi Sharon! It was great to meet you at Alt Summit last week. I was inspired by our chat and will definitely be trying the air dry route more often these days. I don't even want to think about how much time I've wasted blow drying and curling over the years. Sounds pretty liberating to give it a rest. PS...cute family pic!

  7. It looks beautiful! I am happy I read this today because I have the same hair and I have gotten so many compliments. So long to the hours of curling my hair and trying to make it not friz! All I need is a morning shower and a bobby-pin!

  8. your hair looks beautiful! people should do whatever makes them feel pretty, but i tend to think that obvious curling or straightening looks outdated and fussy. more power!

  9. You look beautiful. I do that with my hair everyday. I didn't know I was being so fashion forward.

  10. "I don't know what it does but it smells amazing" - that is how I pick products too :) And your hair looks great btw.

  11. So glad to hear I am fashion-forward for once! I do my hair maybe 3 times a year. Your hair looks gorgeous. You look great in both pictures!!

  12. We're super lucky this is the style of the day. I'm going to keep coloring, but I love crossing my fingers and hoping my BIG waves air-dry nicely. :)

  13. lOVE! I enjoy Keratase products for this reason :) Can't wait until my hair is your length. xx

  17. love this shot of you guys, sharon! hair and all. :)

  18. Love this! I often air-dry my hair to prevent damage (and because I'm lazy). My problem is that I always get the urge to pull my hair up and not let it dry while down - anyone else have this problem?

    1. Yes--totally. Same thing happens to me. I usually just cheat and blow dry it a little to speed things along.

  19. Really cute family portrait!

I don't 'do' my hair either, and now that it's actually long (kept it short for many years), I've found that there's a nice natural wave, like with your hair :)

  20. Wow, lota of blondes in the family, all with just pretty hair. I try to go air dry as much as possible but I'll add product to keep the hair shiny and shaped, it's called BY (Be Yourself) by framesi.

  21. I've been into natural hair texture lately too! I still blow dry my roots, I haven't come far enough to love the limp (and my hair is liiiiiiimp without some product in the roots) but I just twist and scrunch the ends and head out the door. a bit frizzy, but I love it. feels summery :)

  23. I started doing the same last year- air drying to get that messy, wavy/curly look. But I cheat- I have to dry the top and use a flat iron to kinda lift it off my head or I would look like a pyramid- and straighten the front because I have tighter curls framing my face that just are annoying and unruly. I use a anti-frizz mousse from Paul Mitchell when its wet, and Bedhead After Party when its almost dry, and then Rusk Deepshine Lustre to further tame the frizz and add some shine. And a little hairspray to keep the lift and the front off my face. Sometimes I use this powder dry shampoo stuff on my scalp on the top back of my head and tease it for more lift. Its all better than straightening it with a blowdryer and flat iron every morning when its hot in my bathroom and I am not wanting to wake up earlier to get ready for work. I also color my hair because I like mine a bit darker and less red than my natural color. Oh, and to color the few grays that are creeping in.....ssshh ;)

  24. Oh, and your hair looks great like that :) I know it takes a minute to get used to not doing stuff to your hair...

  25. i have always just found myself too lazy to do my hair, like ever, but if you call it trendy, ok by me!

  26. Beautiful photo--and your hair looks pretty.

Have you tried sock buns? Or bun donuts? If you put your hair in a high ponytail and then put the donut around the end and start rolling it down, it ends up curling it in big bouncy curls. Often I'll put my hair up in that when it's still very slightly damp and wear it in a bun one day, and then the next I'll take the bun out and spray some dry shampoo in it and have loose curls with no heat. Not drying/curling it is SO much nicer to your hair--all that heat fries it!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ha, who knew this was trendy? I've always air dried, and since I've been using leave in (Perfect 10 keratin leave in spray), it doesn't frizz aaaaand dries relatively straight.

  28. I was never one to "do" my hair (don't even own a hair brush), but after having a kid even minimal blow-drying went out the window. My favorite product is Glossy Modeling Putty for Wizards No. 4 by Davines. It's not cheap but the tube lasts forever and I basically get my hair cut twice a year so it's my one hair splurge. I find that if I let my hair dry and then scrunch in some of the putty my hair has a loose wave and it gets rid of the frizzies. I love your new natural look!

  29. Can I be honest? From the beautiful photo of your family to your hair confession, my favorite part of this post just might be "written in center justification for no reason". =)

  30. Thank you thank you thank you - I am now officially hip, cool and groovy! My hair has not met up with a hair dryer for an age - I do manage to introduce it to a comb every now and then - but i do love the bounce and energy that comes its way when I let it go wild and just finger comb it when wet!

  31. I love your hair! In the summer I love going to be with wet hair and in the morning I wake up with soft natural wave curls. I think your family photo is beautiful, it looks natural and real and I didn't think twice about your hair!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I like that you don't know what the purpose of your hair care product is either. You've chosen it based on smell. This? Well, this says you're my people.

  33. You look beautiful! We are so critical about ourselves, it's hard to look past our own expectations. It inspired me to not do a thing this morning (although all I usually do is brush it...).

  34. You're beautiful - I'm a huge proponent of the "do-nothing" do...and you pull it off amazingly.

  35. I love this post! You look effortlessly beautiful. I favour that kind, I do as little as I can. I have also started to not blow dry my hair, I just really can't be bothered to spend 10 minutes doing it, especially in the summer heat. I do brush mine, but if I didn't have to, I wouldn't either ;-) x

  36. I LOVE your blog!! I love your hair too. I think the photo at the end is stunning! I have stick strait hair, so when I let it air dry it looks the same as if I blow dry it.

    I experienced Hair-Liberation.

  38. I love it!! I've been going brush-and-blowdryer-less too, lately, but only on the weekends and haven't had to courage to do it for the workweek. This is giving me the boost I need to liberate myself lol (it's great being a girl, isnt it? :) )

  39. I think brushing your hair (and washing it) is just part of good grooming. I just think, "What would my grandmother do?" (a very stylish lady). Although she didn't go overboard on makeup or hair, she always looked very pulled-together. I think this trend looks sloppy. Just my take.

    1. I actually love this comment. So sweet. I hope my granddaughter looks at me with such admiration someday! My husband's grandma can barely walk around the house, but every week she gets her hair done at the salon! It makes her so happy!

    2. I'm glad, I didn't mean it to be critical of you. :) I think people should do what they would like, and that trends change. It's a different era...I don't know whether to hold onto the past or embrace the future.

  41. I think the hair looks great, but if you wanted to keep the low maintenance (and with three kids who wouldn't?), try a hair serum. Works wonders with out trying.

  42. living in hawaii for the last 10 years really has ruined me when it comes to hair. 1st, i never trusted anyone at the 'haircut store' to cut it so i would just let it go. and voila now i have hair down to my bum. 2nd, it is way to stinking hot to take the time to blow dry, or if i did actually do my hair it would just go flat within an hour anyway. so most often i did the 'do nothing' do. my friends decided to call it mermaid hair. kinda frizzy, kinda wet, kinda dry, kinda curly, kinda awesome.
now that i am living on the east coast i think i will have to change that especially with winter coming up. i didn't have to fear getting hypothermia from wet hair before now.

  43. This is the sweetest family photo I've seen in a long time. Not too "posey", just lots of love.

  44. I've stopped doing my hair also. I think I'll start using the fashion forward excuse too. haha. I love your family photo. I wish I had a cool family photo. I just have cheesy posey ones from studios.

  45. Love this! Messy hair is the best. Amazing family photo, it's so hard to get kids to sit still, this perfectly captures the energy and feeling of a loving family. Also - thanks for the link! xo

  46. You want to know what I did? I stop combing and dyeing my hair! It was VERY difficult in the beginning and I'm only 42 with masses of grey hair. The funny thing is people actually come to me telling me all sorts of compliments! Have a good week!

  47. Hooray! I JUST found your blog via "cup of Jo" who i somehow JUST FOUND too. Clearly, i've been living under a rock!

Aww i LOVE this post! It makes me feel so much better! I [barely] do my hair either. Everyone in NY looks so groomed, at least i'm not the only one, NOT. :) :)

I love your family photo, so much life and love. It's so glorious. :)

    Smiles and Blessings to you,
    Jenipher :)

  48. Good for you. I also don't do much for my hair. I put creme conditioner in it and some spray gel, scruch and hope for the best. I am accepting that I have frizzy coarse waves and curls. I've always had a bit of messy hair and don't want to fight it anymore. It is easier to just accept and enjoy that I have a full head of hair still. You look so st, real and naturally beautiful.
