My Theory on Buying School Clothes

Here's Ella on her first few days of second grade.

The only clothes I bought her this year for school is a new pair of shoes, a sweater, and one dress (below in white). Other than that, she's been mixing in the same stuff from the summer, borrowing from her brother's closet, and wearing the same over-priced backpack she used last year.  Oh that backpack.  I bought it in a small shop in Paris thinking I was being so clever. Only to find out it was currently being sold at every J.Crew. haha

I plan on buying her more clothes as the weather changes. Until then, she'll be wearing her summer clothes. It's been too hot to do otherwise! Do you buy your kids clothes as needed or in one big shopping spree? I like to take it in slowly. I end up buying too much junk otherwise.
Notice her thrilled face. I had to beg her to take these pictures. Seconds later, she was off running!
The official first day of school picture. Stoked to get this picture over. haha

SOOOO? Where are my boys? Are the going to model their first day of school clothes?  Nope. They go to a different school and wear uniforms. Terribly stiff, bright orange uniforms. It's painful. Get your sunglasses on before reading on . . .

It's pretty normal for NYC families to split up their kids at different schools. It just depends on what schools have openings. I won't be surprised if they all go to different middle schools and high schools, too.  Each school specializes in something, and kids/PARENTS look for schools that focus on their strengths--whether it be math, the arts or science. So far it's worked out pretty good.

  1. yes-the boys don't have the most exciting uniform...but atelast it makes choosing clothes in the morning easy.

  2. I love the fact that your girl borrows some of her brothers' clothing. How cute!! I love that little white dress. And, those orange uniforms. Wow. Just wow. I've never seen anything like it. That color is just not cool. How cruel of that school! haha

  3. My boys wear uniforms and I could not be happier. Mornings would be a disaster without them! It is going to be sad though not dressing my daughter in all the cute clothes Fall offers. But perhaps it will lead to less fights between the two of us :)

  4. Ella has the best style. I'm serious. I'm 22 and consciously taking notes on how to dress more (or exactly) like her.

  5. I grew up wearing uniforms and I always secretly loved it when the other kids complained, now at 27 my husband says I basically dress in a uniform of my own devices!

  6. I use to buy in all in one big trip..but with #3..and 20 plus years of experience I shop in small chunks...looking for the exact right pieces...but #3 also is spoiled rotten and has very nice things!

  7. I also approach the clothes buying for my three the same way. A little here and there as needed - for the exact same reason! Too much junk.

PS - Jake and Cole have the same backpack in blue. Love it and thought it was a bit different, but now you can get them everywhere. But still love them!

  10. Ella has a great smile. And are those glasses prescription, or is she just trying to look cool?

  11. I remember as kids going on a big shopping spree before school started, it added to the excitement for the first day of school. That orange is pretty bad but would be handy for a field trip so you could spot the kids quickly! I agree with you, quality over quanity.

  12. Uniforms are the worst! Coming from California, I feel like your self-expression is limited when you are forced to wear the same thing as everyone else. Sorry for the bitterness, I have to wear a stupid uniform shirt to work. Even though I've gotten used to it, I still hate it. But your boys make even bright orange look cute, and it must make mornings easier on you, right? I'm glad Ella lucked out and doesn't have to wear the orange. She's a doll, love her little style! Thanks for sharing!

  13. How does that work out, logistically, sending the kids to different schools? How are you able to get everyone where they need to be on time? I'm newly married and don't see kids in our lives for at least a few years, but I'm always curious to hear how city moms manage. I grew up in suburbia but live in Manhattan now. Parenting in the city seems like a challenge! And your kids are adorable!

    1. good questions. luckily their school times start and finish an hour from each other so i work it out. the first couple days were rough, but i think we're getting into a routine. parenting in the city is a challenge--but so is parenting in the suburbs. i've tried it both ways. for me, i thrive, in the city.

  14. she's darling. we usually get a few special things while on vacation in august because they feel 'exotic' (that means anything other than the walmart or jc penny where we live, which is gross) and then we fill in as it goes...from the thrift or hand me downs or on line. My middle son is the one obsessed with fashion and can make any outfit look carelessly mod. My second grader is still in love with tu-tu's and wears them with everything...hoping this passes soon!

  15. WOW! O&O are ready for Halloween!:) I love E's white dress:)
You mentioned,'Each school specializes in something, and kids/PARENTS look for schools that focus on their strengths--whether it be math, the arts or science.' What do their schools specialize in? Happy first week of school:)

    1. hahah. halloween indeed! they have in long sleeve too! ha

Ella's school focuses on the arts and language skills (half of her week in spanish immersion)
The boys school is heavily structured and focused on academics, particularly math (they have chess once a week as an elective)

  16. I had the same approach for school clothes. My kindergartner got one special first day outfit and a new pair of shoes (that she needed, a pair converse in her favorite color yellow). And a new backpack because she didn't have one. That's it. Everything else she has been wearing all year long. I figured why buy more stuff, she already has clothes that fit her that she loves. I figure I'll buy her things as she needs them.

p.s. Ella is an inspiration to us all. Gorgeous little girl, that one.

p.p.s. when you said uniform, I was hoping to see something ala Dead Poets Society, like little blazers with shorts. Who picked the orange polos?

  17. American Apparel doesn't freak you out? The whole vibe of the place? The philosophy behind their ads? The sleazy CEO? Not meant to be an accusation or snarky - just curious. I get kind of skeeved out by the place. Am I the only one that feels that way?

    1. yes--while i admit the vibe of the place isn't exactly kid friendly and the CEO's reputation is horrible, i overlook the companies short comings and focus my attention on their "made in america" philosophy. LA Times printed this article about American Apparel on June 3,2012. here's an excerpt:

The company's seven-story factory, a former Southern Pacific Railway freight depot, is the biggest garment-making facility in the U.S., according to an industry trade group. Here, 4,500 workers staggered over two shifts cut, sew, fold, box and ship clothes to the company's 253 stores and other clothiers worldwide.

American Apparel may be best known for its hip stores, racy ads and controversial chief executive, Dov Charney. But this factory and the thousands it employs are what truly make the company stand out, said Sarah Y. Friedman, executive director of the National Assn. for the Sewn Products Industry. Few other U.S. clothing manufacturers employ more than a few hundred workers, she noted.

"American Apparel is very, very remarkable," she said. "Anytime you have a retailer with thousands of employees still in the U.S. — that is pretty remarkable."

  18. Ha! I complain about my son's uniform (red cardigan, white oxford shirt and a tie--a TIE!--in pre-k) but I'll take it over the orange polo, haha. And this is coming from a person that loves the color orange. But in the polo, not so much. Although I like the easyness of it--just a polo, pants and shoes, and good to go. And Ella, she's a cutie. Styling darling.

I too buy my kids' clothes in batches, but maybe big batches at times? haha It depends. I do know that I might like some new stuff on the shelves a few months from now, so I know not to buy too much ahead of time, because I will still want more for them eventually. I just try to make careful purchases and not go overboard.

  19. Very stylish Ella, per usual. The boys are lucky- Less to think about. I would have done better in school if we had uniforms. I sat in class worried about my outfits measuring up all day... every day...

  20. When I lived in Sweden in 2007 I wanted a Fjall Raven backpack more than anything... but I spent my money on travel instead of things and went home broke. I finally got mine last year when I found out J. Crew started carrying them here!
