Mint Chocolate Vegan Protein Shake (and the photo that inspired it)

tastes bettet than it looks.
This is the protein shake I've been making for awhile now. I missed it so much when I was on the cruise that I made one for breakfast and lunch yesterday. I love it because I always have the ingredients on hand, it's packed with nutrients, and I feel full after drinking it. Sometimes I add avocado (it makes it so creamy), but mostly I'm frustrated with that fruit. Either it's too hard or over ripe, so I've been leaving it out. Tip: I always make sure to add plenty of mint extract to mask the earthy/grassy flavor of the hemp protein. It's intense man.

Mint Chocolate Vegan Protein Shake

6-8 oz of chocolate almond milk
3 TBS hemp protein
1 TBS chia seeds
1 tsp virgin coconut oil
1/2 tsp peppermint extract
3 ice cubes
1/2 frozen large banana (or 1 small banana)

Mix all ingredients in blender until smooth.

Last June I wrote, "I have months when I don't care about what I eat, then I get a picture back of myself that shocks me into eating healthy again." Here's my current one (it's so much better than last years) . . .

Picture taken last Sunday. I weighed around 155. Rob thinks this is an over share. I figured I walked around a cruise ship like this with tons of people, what's a few more.
2013 hasn't gotten off to a healthy start. 2012 was filled with marathon training and health coach tips. It might have been my healthiest year in a decade. Since this January, I've almost completely stopped exercising, haven't returned emails from my health coach, and gained a total of 20 pounds. I know how to stay in shape, but I've chosen to do the exact opposite. It's been fun. But I'm ready to make some changes. and this time i mean it. While I don't think I'll be wearing a bikini by this summer, my goal is to stop looking 4 months pregnant. Especially since I'm done with that shiz.

  1. Girl, you are brave! I have had a pretty unhealthy 2013 too. I used to work out 5x a week, and now I am lucky if I work out once. I blame it on being a busy working mom... but I need to stop making excuses. As always, thanks for the honesty and the inspiration!

  9. Love this. I'm in the same boat- I know how to be healthy, but it's so much more fun to eat cake and skip the workout. Thanks for the honesty, you've inspired me to pull out the blender this morning!

  10. Awesome post! I love how honest you are. I'm in the same boat weight-wise and trying to make the right choices, but it's hard. Especially with young kids around (damn that mac & cheese, chicken nuggets, and ice cream! ugh) I just love how you tell it like it is, unlike so many other bloggers out there who sugar coat everything and touch up all their photos. Makes me nuts.
Keep it up!! Would love any more healthy recipes you feel like sharing. Have a great weekend!!

  12. way to go. you look great. but what's better is that you put up a photo where you think you don't. there's too much shit out there that makes women hate themselves and hate other women. this is the opposite. yay you.

  13. Dude ... me, too! Except I have 35 pounds to drop! Yikes! If I ate the way I feed my kids, I'd look incredible, but no. They get healthy, organic food, I get the junky comfort food, lol. Guess I'm proof that vegetarians can be chubby, too.

    1. Ha! I'm a chubby vegetarian too. I still have baby weight to lose, from both of my pregnancies. And the last one was done with 18 months ago. The first one almost five years ago. That weight never came off. Good thing I don't really gain; I'm just stuck at the same weight.

But Sharon, you, my dear, look wonderful. I'd walk around in a bathing suit without a care in the world if I looked like that.

  16. Love this, Sharon. Thanks for keeping it real. You are still a beauty, even with the extra 20 lbs. I've been doing Weight Watchers and it works so well and you can tailor it to dietary preferences. (BTW, I'm not associated with WW--just think the program is realistic and doable).

  18. Good for you Sharon - you can do it! It sounds like you had an overwhelming winter and start to the spring, so I bet it will feel great to get a *fresh* start and get healthy! Can't wait to hear how it goes.

  20. You are so inspiring! Thanks for the reminder that we can go back and look as good as we did a few months ago...a year ago...whatever it is, by returning to healthy habits. I've been saying, "I'll start tomorrow" for like 5 years.

  22. I love you, Sharon. Haha, this is awesome! I will say, I think you look great even in your "bad" photo, but I understand - I just had the same "I look like that?!" picture moment over the weekend. I just need to lose 10 pounds. And, I know I sound like a whiny little btch when i say this, but I just keep putting it off because it's juuuust teeeen poooouunds. I don't feel like it should be that hard, and it's hard to find motivation when uuuuusually I don't repulse myself. Usually.

  23. ....aaaand I just never want to turn into one of those people that are like, "Mmm, a cupcake! I wish I could have one of those, but do you know how much trans fat is in one?!" Those people make me sad. Every time I hear, "Nothing tastes as good as being skinny feels," I'm think, "Yall been dieting too long. DIET food doesn't taste that good, but real food? Yeah, it tastes better than skinny. Promise."

  25. It's brave and even more so, refreshing of you to post this! You could have just sucked in and stood at fab angle and we wouldn't be the wiser. You're still a small person, but it's good to be health conscious too.
