Camera Questions

I'm frequently asked what kind of camera I use. The answer: Canon Rebel T2i (body only) and a 50mm f/1.8 camera lens. Remember the first time I used it? It was raining hard, so I had to use my camera in the lobby. April 5, 2011. Love this picture.

Picking a camera can be overwhelming. To make things easier, professional photographer Nicole Hill Gerulat put together an easy to understand page of what she recommends. I bought the cheapest camera and lens she suggested from the store she suggested.  I have her page bookmarked and I go back often to dream about upgrading to this.

Here's my nonprofessional advice: When buying a camera, choose a brand that your friends are using. I know Liz and Jordan use Canons. If I ever have questions, I can ask them. They were extremely helpful leading me to know what camera to buy.  Another reason to copy friends: if they ever decide to upgrade, I'm ready to buy their hand-me-down cameras/lenses! No shame in that.

The pictures in this post are some of my favorites. I recently had each of them blown up poster size and framed. I'm so happy with the results.  The first one of the boys sitting is going in my living room and the second and third pictures are going in my endless hallway. I would show them in my house, but I'd need a wide angle lens for that. Nicole! Jordan! Liz! Any other Canon owners? Heeelp.

  2. Why did you decide on using that lens as your first? Woudl you recommend it as your "go-to" lens?

  3. Thanks for answering! Do you use a certain editing software? Photoshop? iPhoto?

  4. Mandy: It's the only lens I own :) So, yes, it's my go to lens by default :)
Lizzie: I use iPhoto to do small edits and Picasa for making colleges. I would love to take a class in Photoshop since I haven't used it since college. Someday.

  6. Mandy: I chose it as my first lens because it was A. it's a portrait lens and i knew I would be taking mostly pictures of my kids. B. It was within my budget :)

  7. We just bought a Nikon, cause our friend has one. Too bad he's not a professional, but he knows more than we do. It will probably take me 10 yrs to figure out what this camera can do, but at least it came with some DVD lessons.

  9. My friend that lives in NYC introduced me to your blog and I enjoy seeing your posts... One day when I have children they will have similarly awesome style... I own a Canon camera and the wide angle lens I have for it is wonderful... I also purchase mostly everything from bhphotovideo.com. The lens can be found here http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/217772-USA/Sigma_432101_W_A_24mm_f_1_8_EX.html. It's a little pricey, but not nearly as bad as some others... It has a great f stop and wide angle.

  11. Love your blog. I was wondering what your favorite camera settings are for photographing kids? Do you use Auto, Aperture priority, something else? I like to shoot with the 50mm 1.8 lens without flash and I keep ending up with slightly out of focus shots of an active 2 year old. Any settings that seem to have the best results for you?

  12. Audrey: Thanks! I run into the same problem. Since use automode, I have no idea why sometimes I get good shots and sometimes I don't. I use the sports mode sometimes. I wish I could be more help! If I took a photo class, I would have more control of the pictures. Someday. Until then, I'll take a million shots and hope they keep accidentally working.

  13. Good to know I'm not the only one! That's what I have been doing (taking a lot) and then editing. It's just frustrating when the perfect expression is slightly out of focus but the shot of him blinking is perfectly exposed. Oh, well. :) Also wanted to thank you for your recommendation of the Crewcuts V-neck tees in one of your other posts. Finally a long and skinny shirt for my tall skinny boy.

  16. My husband and I {finally} got married on that day! In the Santa Fe plaza! We eloped, but we had flowers, photographer, and the clothes. Basically everything but the guests, lol. Our children were our witnesses, and a homeless guy played music for us.
