Doomed

I took these pictures right before my mother-in-law came to NYC a few months ago. Before anyone comes to visit from out of town, I usually stock the fridge to give the illusion that I feed my kids. Before and after pictures above. Of yeah, and I scrub it too. NYorkers have a tendency to live day by day and order A LOT of take-out. I'm one of them. You should see the insanity before a hurricane/natural disaster. We're doomed. Do you do all your grocery shopping once a week? Once a day? Twice a day? I usually always try to have breakfast in stock (oranges and ice cream should start the day off fine as seen above), but the rest of the meals are thought of last second.

  1. why have such a big fridge if it's normally empty like the before picture? i cook 3 meals a day, so i tend to grocery shop twice a week. my fridge still isn't terribly full though since most of my shopping is buying produce that rests on our counters to be quickly incorporated into meals.

  3. We shop a few times a week. How can you get away with so little with kids in the house? That's crazy/interesting to me.

  4. You're so funny, Sharon. Lunch is a hard one for me to eat at home. Knowing I have food at home that I really like helps. Is going to the store a chore? Don't they deliver groceries? You'd save a ton even if you just cut back to eating one meal out a day. Easy for me to say, I have no clue what it's like living in the city. ha!

  5. that means you have very healthy kids who can eat whatever is out there. Unfortunately for me, if my kids eat anything with perservatives, color and unnatural things, they will go bouncing up and down.. food sensitivity they call it. so someone in the house has to cook therefore the fridge looks like the right pic ALL THE TIME. =)

  6. The cashiers at my neighborhood grocery store know me by name. I am there almost every day. I have an issue with pre-planning anything, so dinner plans come to me around 4:00 at work and then I rush to get the ingredients by dinner time. Probably not the most effective. Is it weird that I like the look of an empty fridge. Looks so clean and new, haha.

  7. If I lived in a more walkable place or if I had a car I think I would go grocery shopping more often. I think I would like that more because I could have fresher food! I'd also probably save money because I would be wasting less.

  8. love your comment. just to clarify: i don't feed my kids whatever is out there haha! i have a grocery store next to their school and only buy the preservative free, color free, natural things too :) we go daily :). we don't do fast food, we do take-out.

  9. I usually go to the grocery store twice a week to shop for about four or five days worth of meals. Breakfast is usually made of pantry type items like steel cut oats and eggs, lunches are often leftovers, and I make dinner almost every night. So I guess I'm really shopping for dinner and the occasional special breakfast.

  10. I shop every couple of days because if I shop for the whole week by day 3 I don't feel like eating what I bought. I'm constantly amazed at what you can have delivered to your door in NYC. I was on the phone with my friend who lives in there and she was having a wheat grass shot delivered to her! Unreal!

  11. I shop, I cook, but I don't enjoy it. We recently moved to the NoVA area, so take-out is not as readily available. That said, I can either make a veggie lasagna tonight or go get something. I am leaning towards the 'getting'.

  12. You know I love you, but your fridge on the right looks fake. You need a tupperware tub of leftover goo and something covered in aluminum foil to really trick your guests.

  13. I do my grocery shopping once a week or once every two weeks. It is the death of me! I always come back in a bad mood.

  14. It always amazes me how people can plan their meals for the entire week. I really need to be in the mood to eat or make something. I go to the grocery store a couple times a week. I am an organized person but when it comes to preparing a meal, I like to do it last minute...depending on what our family is in the mood for. I find cooking and baking more exciting that way. I am thrilled to discover that New Yorkers are like that too:) I would love to order take-out every day:) I ♥ NY:)

  16. I do a "big shop" usually once a week, then pop into the grocery store every other day as needed. We live in Queens and are lucky enough to be a 30-second walk to a grocery store. It's so close and we go so often we now call it "The Pantry".

  17. I like how your fruit bowl looks like a centerpiece in your fridge (pic on left), and that the ice-cream,mayo,and glass jar are in the exact same spot in both pictures:)lol
P.S. Your fridge better be FILLED the next time I come up:)jk:)LOL

  18. The first photograph reminds me of my fridge during my first few years in New York. Things slowly changed, especially once we discovered my son had food allergies.

I quickly had to learn how to cook and organize my grocery lists (or else I was going to Whole Foods everyday). Now, I grocery shop twice a week and cook/bake just about everything we eat.

While, I'm sure this new routine lends itself to a healthy lifestyle, I do dream about McDonald's and take out Chinese food from our old spot.

  21. That is so funny! I heard about using the oven to store sweaters! I started getting better at planning meals after using the Mark Bittman iphone app. I choose the recipes for the week, and move them to my virtual calendar and the ingredients go to a shopping list. So when I am at the store I always have the list with me. I find that I save money planning ahead.

  22. You just brought me down memory lane! Living in Manhattan for 15 years (before kids), I only had wine in my fridge. I would call the deli for a delivery of just about anything at any hour. And I remember having the gas turned off in one apartment so I could use my oven as storage! Aahhh the good old days!

  24. As a fellow NYer, I can sympathize. I was all for ordering takeout, but since I've had to cut down my expenses, I've been cooking more. Hence, my fridge is always full now. I like to do one shop for the week and then if need be, get little things throughout the week (like veggies and fruit).

Your fridge is sooooo spacious! I love it. My fridge is so tiny. I'm only 5'1 and it's shorter than me! lol

  25. i tend to have random items that don't match in my fridge & pantry...but coffee, cream, and sugar are ALWAYS in supply!

  26. I guess your boys don't spend much time with the fridge door open gazing at the contents asking 'what can I eat next?' My seven year old has found his teenage appetite early. I think he would weep at your fridge! I like it... hauling shopping back from the car to stock it once a week is my least favourite job. Another reason to live in NYC that I never knew existed! A x
