Then and Now

I found the picture on the left of me and my mom while I was cleaning this afternoon. I'm about the same age my kids are now. I tried to recreate the picture with Oscar when I picked him up for school, but it didn't really work. I'm overly stylized, and he's not enthused. It lacks the spontaneity and seems over thought compared to the original. But there's something about posing with my kids like this.

It's not a pose professional photographers use, yet it's one of my favorites. Cheek to cheek. I've always loved walking around the house, holding my kids tight against my face. Their skin so soft. Their cheeks so bouncy. Nothing like it. It's such a weird sign of endearment, but one of my favorite parts about motherhood.

My mother died five years before I started having kids. I never had the chance to directly ask her about her favorite parts of motherhood.  Seeing this picture shows me we share the same joy. Cheeks! I like to think it's something I learned from her.

What's one of your favorite part about motherhood?

  6. So sweet! I love cheeks, too. When my baby wakes up from her nap, we stand cheek-to-cheek looking in the mirror. She loves it and I do, too. Her cool, delicate skin is so soft and kissable. Motherhood is so magical!

  7. What a beautiful memory, I'm so sorry about your mom. I know having my son has brought my mom and I much closer together.

Your pictures reminded me of this funny memory. When I was in high school there was a mother daughter look-a-like contest at the mall (small town). And I entered with a photo of me at the beach with our golden retriever, my mom had a similar photo, and it was uncanny how much I looked like her. We didn't win, but I love the pictures.

Have you seen that photo series where the photographer recreates a childhood photo of the person as an adult, hilarious and also eerie since you can really see who they will become at such a young age.

  8. Great pics and great memories.
I love cheek to cheek too.I never knew that about you. I guess I learn something new everyday. I love the softness of babies'/kids' skin.
One of my favorite things about motherhood is going on adventures with my kids. I love planning trips/events. It is extra special when we all have a great time at the event!:) I also love volunteering in my kids' classroom too. I feel like I learn a little bit about their world for the day when I go in and help.
Motherhood can be very challenging without a Mom to help guide you through this amazing journey. I think that is why God made Sisters,Aunts,Friends,...:)
    Love u:)

  10. What a beautiful post! Your and your mom look so happy. (I nuzzle my kids faces so much with my own face that I can never keep makeup on at the end of the day. But it's worth it to feel those little cheeks!)

  11. Cheeks are so yummy. And I love my girl's hands too - so soft and so expressive when she talks. Nothing better than walking her to school hand in hand...

  13. Talking, talking, talking. I love talking to my kids and listening to their version of the world. I love when they get home from school and tell me all the little details of the day, wall ball, lunch, teachers mood, etc... I love it all.

  16. Oh this post brought tears to my eyes! I lost my mom last summer, 2 months before my wedding. I am now 3 months pregnant (and praying for twins actually) and love looking at old pictures of my mom and I when I was a little girl - she was the best! I'm so looking forward to motherhood, but I often think of the questions I never got to ask her. But I know in the heart of hearts, she probably already taught me the answers...or will be there guiding me to the answers from heaven...

  19. Thanks for sharing this post. I lost my mom a decade ago and last year had my first baby boy. I definitely wish I could share this time with her (and ask her for advice!). Your post helped remind me that our moms probably pass on a little bit of themselves to us more than we realize.

P.S. Cheek to cheek is the absolute best :)

  21. You know, my favorite part of being a mother is how my kids always have a way of making me feel like I am the most beautiful, talented, special woman in the world. I could wake up with the hair of a banshee, but yet, they are there saying, "Oh Mom, you look beautiful today!" So even when I'm not so great, or acting like a great mom, they have a way of putting things in perspective and I am so grateful for them. Love this post Sharon. Its fabulous. I also loved your post - you look a lot like your mother, both of you are beautiful ladies.

  22. I love the two photos- very similar. I am also a cheek enthusiast. But I do love to rub their shoulders and arms while they tell me their stories... something I learned from my momma.
