: I first heard him when he opened for Kaskade. Without ever hearing London's music before, I instantly got it. I danced and sang as if I was a lifetime fan. I just might be. one night and the next day I couldn't get it out of my head. Ella showed me their David Letterman performance and I was hooked. A little hippy dippy and totally stereotypical LA, but fun. I hope they don't take themselves too seriously. From the looks of it, they just are out for a good time. I

. For some reason, that song didn't make me want to buy their album or learn more about them. It was a good song and all, but too popular too quickly. I was tired of it before it had a chance. But now I like it.Here's Man on Fire. Hope you like.

If you like Edward Sharpe, you might like Of Monsters and Men- they have an album out called "My Head is an Animal," and it has been a great backdrop to everything this summer. Also... you've heard the Avett Brothers, right? And Mumford and Sons?

DeleteThe Dirty Projectors just came out with a new album. They're fantastic! I've also been really getting into old country a lot lately - perfect cleaning music. First Aid Kit and the Secret Sisters are two girl groups I love.
ReplyDeleteIn 2009 I was downtown and I overheard some guys calling a taxi to get back to their tour bus. Taxis make no sense in our town and take forever, so I offered to give them a ride. They were hanging out in front of one of our main venues in town so I figured they were a band and they were really nice and not threatening at all, so I gave the manager and one other guy a ride to their bus. They invited me and any friends I wanted to bring to the show but I'd never heard of them and had plans, so the manager gave me some tshirts in thanks instead. Anyway, it turned out the band was Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros! I didn't put it together until about a month ago when I found one of the shirts :)
oh my gosh. that is so funny. their poor manager having to take care of alllllll those bandmates. can you imagine? i would suspect managing a band of 3 or 4 people would be hard. ESATMZ has what 50 people in it?

ReplyDeleteMiracle Fortress (electronic from Montreal, amazing!), Arcade Fire (biggest little indie band, also from Montreal, the Suburbs won the Grammy for Album of the Year 2011), Tokyo Police Club (indie pop rock, good for all generations, based in Toronto), Fleet Foxes (indie folk from Seattle), Cults (Brooklyn-based girl/boy duo electro pop), Magnetic Fields (had an album in the late-90s called 69 Songs about Love, they are not all winners but there are some real gems),The Modern Lovers (led by Jonathan Richman, mostly from the 1970s-80s but you would think it's brand new). Enjoy!

ReplyDeleteIf you want to see how much chill the Magnetic Zeros are you should definitely check out their new film Big Easy Express. It features them, Mumford and Sons, and a bluegrass band called Old Crow Medicine Show traveling on a historical train from California to New Orleans. All three bands stay on the train for a week and a half and play beautiful music and see the American landscape. It really is a beautiful film.
ReplyDeleteWe've been on an oldies kick around here -- all started with my husband singing "I'm Your Puppet" while playing puppets with the kids. My 3yo and 5yo can often be heard singing "This Magic Moment," "Under the Boardwalk," and, of course "Up on the Roof" -- and then I saw your up on the roof post coincidentally (or not?). Hope you get permission to spend more time up on the roof -- it's trouble-proof!

They toured on this gorgeous antique train. It will make you love them even more! You can download the film on iTunes, and I recall it being family friendly.
