I saw this cartoon last week and can totally relate. This summer I've adored reading two memoirs. One way better than my life (Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?), and one way worse than my life (The Glass Castle). After seeing this cartoon, I'm on the hunt for a memoir that is pretty much like my life. I hope Snooki writes one quick. We have soo much in common.
Read any good memoirs?
Just finished Blood, Bones & Butter by Gabrielle Hamilton. Fabulous "memoir"! Have you been to her restaurant Prune? I really enjoyed her writing style.
ReplyDeleteOh, Snooki's one step ahead of you - "Confessions of a Guidette" is your new must-read!
ReplyDeletehaaaa
DeleteI also loved Blood Bones and Butter! And The Glass Castle is on my NYPL hold list!
ReplyDeleteYes! Wild by Cheryl Strayed is awesome because it's simultaneously way better AND way worse than your life. (But not at all pretty much the same as your life). Win-win (win!)
ReplyDeleteOh the Glory of It All by Sean Wilsey was fabulous!
ReplyDeleteLoved both of those memoirs. I read Jane Lynch's memoir, Happy Accidents, because I saw it in a thrift store and thought it'd be full of laughs. I absolutely loved it, because it was fewer laughs than I expected and more heart moments.
ReplyDeleteI also agree in regards to Blood, Bones and Butter. She is an incredible writer (and if you read the book you'll find out why!) and I highly recommend her restaurant- absolutely fantastic and delicious.
ReplyDeleteDon't laugh, but Rob Lowe's was really pretty good!
ReplyDeleteJen Lancaster has several! All funny and thematic - Bitter is the New Black, and Such a Pretty Fat are my favs. Sound way more serious than they are, but also realistic for the everyday person's life!
ReplyDeleteLove love love memoirs, and the cartoon made me laugh out loud.
ReplyDeleteHere's my (partial) list: Dearie by Bob Spitz (Julia Child), Tout Sweet by Karen Wheeler, This Life is in Your Hands by Melissa Coleman, Bossy Pants by Tina Fey, It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the time by Moira Hodgeson, The Latehomecomers by Kao Kalia Yang, A Homemade Life by Molly Wizenberg, The Dirty Life by Kristin Kimbell, Dirty Secret by Jessie Sholl, As Always, Julia by Joan Reardon. So many more, but I'll stop there!
The Glass Castle is my favorite book of all times:) Excellent writer!:)

I have not read any lately but my husband has been on a streak of reading them and just finished This Is a Call: The Life and Times of Dave Grohl by Paul Brannigan which loved!
ReplyDeleteI just finished "Garlic & Sapphires" by Ruth Reichl and loved it. It's about her tenure at the NYTIMES as a restaurant critic and all of the disguises and personalities she came up with to retain her anonymity. I'll bring it to the next articles club if you are interested.
ReplyDeleteI'll throw in another vote for both Garlic and Sapphires (as well as Reichl's previous two memoirs, "Tender at the Bone" and "Comfort Me with Apples") and Jane Lynch's "Happy Accidents".
ReplyDeleteSome other awesome ones:
Tracks, by Robyn Davidson (trekking solo across the Australian outback with camels)
Zami: A New Spelling of My Name, by Audre Lorde
Borrowed Time: An AIDS Memoir, by Paul Monette
Beyond the Sky and the Earth: A Journey into Bhutan, by Jamie Zeppa
Anything by Augusten Burroughs :)
You would LOVE Tina Fey's "Bossypants!" That one is a gem & you would extremely appreciate her sense of humor. I also have been thinking of reading Diane Keaton's newest memoir, but I can't remember the name of it right now.
ReplyDeleteYes! Diane Keaton's memoir is great. She talks about her career, and past loves (Warren Beatty, Woody Allen and Al Pacino!). But it's really a story about her mother in a lot of ways--and it's incredibly moving. It stands out as one of the best memoirs I've read. Plus, Diane Keaton is just so cool. :)
ReplyDeleteMennonite in a Little Black Dress is awesome! So entertaining and engaging. I highly recommend it :)
ReplyDeletelimit your "you might also like" to 3. five makes it too hard to choose, thus not choosing one at all. three makes you feel like moving forward. xo
