Hi! In October 2010, I moved from San Francisco to Manhattan with my husband, daughter, and twin boys. Since then I've been busy teaching myself and my kids how to hail a cab, fly a kite in Central Park, and walk across the Brooklyn Bridge with style. And a few other things. I write about those other things here. Thanks for stopping by!
Email questions to sharonbeesley@gmail.com.
i am so envious of you-it will be great. a logistical nightmare for those international runners that don't know the city-with so many places diverted etc. anyhow-sure the crowd will be with you the whole way round. good luck!
No, I won't be celebrating while Ny and Nj is still suffering from Sandy. I believe this marathon should have been postponed for a few weeks. Unfortunately many of us still have friends and family with no power, no homes and some people have even lost loved ones. As a life long NYer I am a bit upset about how nonchalant people unaffected by this storm are acting. Now pardon me while I try to find a place to donate necessities too I stead of getting excited about time and resources being diverted.
I'm sorry to be a downer, but I unfortunately know people affected by Sandy and it stinks.
oh, stop it. there are plenty of outlets for you to express your negative feelings about the marathon, and this is not one of them. she's running in memory of her mother and raising money for a great charity- i don't think you need to bring her spirits down before this big moment in her life.
good luck on sunday, sharon!
- from a fellow new yorker who also knows people effected by sandy
i didn't know it was canceled until i read your comment. i was in disbelief until i saw it for myself. thanks for thinking of me :) i'll keep you posted on future plans :)
Marathon Cancelled. I belive new yorkers need more time to have that feeling of running take their minds off it all have heppened. Many still cold and hungry, without their home to go back...:-( I'm sorry for you, but better days are coming!
I agree, Kate. There are lots of people who are out there who are suffering. Hopefully they'll get power back soon so they too can surf the internet and judge bloggers for being happy or excited about something.
sorry it was cancelled. but like you said, understandably so. it is a great accomplishment to have worked so hard and put together the fund raising and everything. i am proud to call you my friend. i am glad you and your family are safe. i pray for all who were affected by the storm.
I don't get why the people that want to can't run the marathon?
If you use that same logic then there should be no leisure activities allowed in NYC until everyone is done suffering. That includes reading/commenting on blogs.
OAJ ~ What did Kate say that was so bad? It was just a simple & very truthful comment to Sharon's post. There is a comments section after all. You were the rude one here. Then Sharon came along behind you with her comment about the boots & the little "ha." I thought you were sorry, Sharon, for that post anyway? And you were feeling "stupider" for posting it? JF ~ Commenting in a blog or a leisure activity doesn't require generators & police escorts. Does that at all make sense to you since you are in the dark? It's true, if you want to run around the city, you can ~ it just won't be an official marathon utilizing resources that could assist those who are desperately in need! A private run also won't start in the most devastated part of the city ~ Statten Island. Comprendè? As a matter of fact, if you live nearby, jog on over there so you can see what's up!
You're right, I don't live in NY. But my town was directly hit with a Cat 4 hurricane awhile back and we lost power for 2 weeks. It was a difficult time for sure, but if a local blogger wrote about boots and a marathon, that would be the least of my concerns.
I was blown away at the help that poured in from people from all over the country after we were hit by the hurricane. Complaining on Sharon's blog isn't doing anyone a bit of good so if you want to make a difference, turn of your computer, go down there, and help clean up the mess.
We actually weren't complaining on Sharon's blog. We were responding to insensitive & judgemental comments such as yours - scroll up & read it again. Do you - having been hit by a hurricane as you say - honestly think that the 1st thing people will do is hop on a comments section in this blog & judge a blogger who is "excited & happy?" The level of suffering is obviously beyond your comprehension or you are unable to hear yourself, which happens to all of us at times. Sharon's blog has a lot to do with NYC. It's to her credit that people are coming here to check in on a city they love. However, her timing & the way she wrote about the topics seemed insensitive - she admitted that herself regarding the boots (& yet her own comment above does make one wonder about her realization.) I have no doubt that all of us who came here appreciate Sharon & her blog - there is grace - however, we don't have to agree with everything Sharon says or what her commenters think in what would appear to be sheer ignorance.
Thank you for calling Sharon out on her "sheer ignorance." The people suffering right now appreciate you doing your part to keep things real on NYC Taught Me.
What I do have is perspective. Stop nit-picking what she posts and actually do some good by volunteering your time. If you're too far away, have a garage sale or sell some stuff on eBay and donate the money to the Red Cross or Salvation Army. If you can't understand this concept, perhaps the level of suffering is above your comprehension as well. Take care.
I was not "calling Sharon out on her sheer ignorance." Those are your words, not mine. I did say that we don't have to agree with everything she says or "what her COMMENTERS think in what would appear to be sheer ignorance." There is a difference. I know what was written and the spirit in which it was intended. You chose to ignore the positives I said about her work/blog. Perhaps she did too. I don't agree with "ha" ing your readers or lecturing them about bagels & toys, when they obviously were in a lot of pain (or were concerned about someone who was). Sharon could have shown the same grace to her readers that she wanted the next day from them when she apologized. (I actually did not find her posts offensive AT ALL, but I did find some of her reponses to her readers offensive.)And letting someone get away with calling your readers "whiners & trolls" and go on about "throwing stones" while the commenter types with an obvious boulder in her hand is not right either. But, she got a thank you. These "trolls" are the folks who have been loyal to her business, privately cheered her on, donated to Fred's team, etc...I admit to being angry about it.I have to accept that what I type here won't be received well or heard in the way it's intended, but I could be wrong. Either way, I wish Sharon the best in all she pursues, 100%.
This is just a really emotional time for everyone and I apologize for my part in this heated debate. She's my sister and I got defensive on her behalf but it wasn't really appropriate. Anyways, thank you for continuing to support her.
i can't believe it was canelled at such short notice - if i had travelled there to run I would have been devestated. yes-i understand why it was cancelled-but to cancel it on friday-madness. so-what happens?
OMG - reading these comments makes me wonder about a bunch of you. Instead of giving Sharon a grilling - get off her blog and find a way to help. I can't stand people who whinge and troll blogs to throw stones - turn your energy into something positive and go do some good!!!!.
Who says we have not. I've had people sleeping in my home since Thursday because they have no power or heat. I've had people over using my showers. And I've donated. There is nothing wrong with calling out a popular blogger on being insensitive. Maybe we're hoping to see her post some links on where and how to donate in her area.
Thank you for your recent post. I was one of the replies that was a put off by your earlier posts. What you did was beautiful and I'm sorry I was harsh in my replies but understand that emotions are on high and your posts came off as insensitive. I'm not perfect either tho. Bless you and your family.
Sorry to see all the people being jerks on here. Some people have nothing better to do with their lives than bring others down. Your posts have done nothing to hurt people in NYC as they recover and the rude comments have done nothing to help the people in NYC- they have only put bad energy into the world. Good work with this blog and with all you do to help your community and your family. You rock!
You are a wonderful person for going and helping. They were lucky to have you there to help. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your beloved city.
I cry for NY and NJ. I was only 18 when I moved to NYC, and then I stayed there for college, graduate school, work, and to fall in love. I raised our daughter and birthed our son in NJ. Reading what you wrote about your 'marathon' broke my heart. I am so glad that communities are coming together to help and to change what mother nature wrought. Thank you for giving your time, energies, and heart.
I'm so sorry for all the people complaining on here about you trying to move on after the storm.
My brother was supposed to run the NYC Marathon this year, too, and it's something he has been working towards for YEARS (he qualified for it [meaning his time is insane, so I jokingly refer to him as my half-Kenyan brother]). Yes, you guys can "try again next year," but marathon training is INTENSE--my brother is unmarried/childless, so I can't imagine how much harder it is to train with the obligations you have to your family. Every runner paid at $270 for the race registration, which is nonrefundable. Many paid for planes, trains, hotel rooms, etc. It was a huge investment of money (a lot of which goes to local businesses!), but mostly of time and discipline. You have to change your lifestyle to be fit for a marathon. You can't just put off running the race for a year--you have to keep training, and for a lot of people, that isn't always possible. It's very understandable that the runners would be really disappointed--and that does not mean they are out of touch with the suffering and devastation around them.
Anyone complaining on here about Sharon needs a reality check. Snide anonymous comments like "I understand that NY is not this families hometown but..." are ridiculous. You clearly adore this city, and your motivation for running the marathon was so lovely (to honor your mother). I'm happy that you were able to help with the recovery effort this weekend, but I'm very sorry that it kept you from being able to run. My family lived through Katrina in New Orleans, and I truly understand how terrible hurricanes and flooding can be. But that doesn't mean that individuals are not entitled to mourn their own losses, however small they may be compared to what others have experienced.
I hope you have another chance to run this, Sharon. But if not, you should still be proud. Thanks for sending some positive energy out into the world and don't let the complainers on here get to you :)
I hope most of the people who were affected by Sandy now have their lives back to normal. I remember how bad it was from watching on the news and first hand reports from people I know. Safety is always a primary concern in situations like those.
Love your blog. You're gorgeous! Good luck on Sunday.

i'm a ashamed to admit i waited with my sister outside of Avita to take a picture of Ricky. we couldn't stop giggling.
DeleteNow isnt the time for marathons or sweet rain boots. Too much suffering. I am sure you are disappointed, but there will be another opportunity.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Kate. There are lots of people who are out there who are suffering. Hopefully they'll get power back soon so they too can surf the internet and judge bloggers for being happy or excited about something.

Well said, I am very surprised and the blasé attitude of the last few posts. I understand that NY is not this families hometown. But have some respect for us.
