Impulse Buy: Ice Skates

This picture screams, "I'm very comfortable in front of the camera."

I've learned with NYC, I just have to give into winter. For years I've been in denial about this dreadful season. Holding my breath for months and looking for signs of spring as soon as possible. That method hasn't worked so well. It only makes it worse. This year I'm fighting back.

My weapon: Ice skates.

Ice skating is free at Bryant Park until March 2. But you need your own skates. I bought the cheapest ones on Amazon for everyone in my family except Rob. I didn't even ask him if he wanted a pair. I can get a sense for these things. Perhaps it was the last thing he asked before he left the house this morning that clued me in.

"You didn't buy those ice skates. Did you?"

Oh yes I did, but not for you! No ice skates for cynics. They rent theirs.

I feel like if we go 10 times, it will be worth it. I just hope my kids don't expect me to teach them. Ugh. Let me skate you brats. Stop trying to hold my hand. You're holding me back. I'm about to unlock my inner champion figure skater.

If things go well, I'll buy a figure skating costume by February. Nothing too flashy. Used probably. Just enough to embarrass my kids so they won't want to be seen with me. I'll pad them up and let them loose in the rink. They'll be fine. I'll be great.

It's going to be the best winter ever.

    2. For the little ones wrap a scarf across their chest and under their arms, them you can hold the ends behind their back..they feel secure and it's less stooping for you...it's a back saver!!

  4. Hahaha. Outdoor ice skating is the best! Although the last time I went ice skating in NYC it was in Rockefeller Center and it was so crowded and the horrible rental ice skates made my ankles bleed. Bryant Park sounds like a much better option!

  5. My fellow (who plays hockey 3 times a week) is convinced I will love winter if we start "family" skating. So we're going to start this Sunday with our 1 year old! He is going to wear her in a carrier because he's an expert skater while I may need to push around a chair so I don't fall down. This is my 27th winter (one year of my life I lived in the tropics) and I still am not used to this shit. And I am from Canada, so I can't even imagine winter for a Florida girl. Good luck!

  6. Funny, no ice skates for cynics. And I can't help but be really interested in what kind of used figure skating outfits one could find. Have fun skating the winter away!

  7. so refreshing. i am debating right now as to whether or not to have children....part of me says hell no. part of me says, yes of course. reading your blog makes me feel like i could still have those "hell no" moments even if i do decide to have kids!

  9. I absolutely loathe the winter (I live in Toronto so we have freezing snowy weather similar to New York). Ice Skating is the ONLY winter activity I actually enjoy. If you can, take a few lessons to get you started. Once you get going it is the most freeing thing. Just wrap up warm and wear something over your ears. Make sure you take some pics! Looking forward to hearing how it goes! Have fun!! Ps. I love reading your blog and seeing pics of your beautiful kiddos. And I bought another dress from Madewell!

  10. I think this is a great idea. Also think maybe it's time for a rewatching of Blades of Glory. Cause you've seen it, right? Cause now you really need to.

  11. I wish I could trade winters with you. Living in FL - I loathe the heat. Every day the temperature drops a degree I cautiously celebrate, and then remember it won't ever get much colder than this. I guess where you grow up really has a long term effect (Massachusetts for me.) Sigh. What I wouldn't give for even the possibility of snow.

  17. I will never, ever forget ice-skating in my childhood both outside on frozen lakes and inside on a rink after school. Some of my best memories are tied up with cold fingers and toes and oh - how I loved Noel Streatfield's 'White Boots' - even more so than 'Ballet Shoes'!
